Plain Vanilla Mom

Frog Pond Small World In a Box

in play, sensory play, small worlds, toddler play on 19/06/13

I love when my diaper shipments arrive! For more than one reason. First I have the assurance of the stocked changing tables,  but secondly C has a whole new toy to play with. That HUGE diapers.com box. (And let me tell you it’s a big box when you are buying diapers for two). That box never fails to entertain for a few days before it gets old.

Usually Mr. C just ends up coloring on those big boxes or even climbing on them but today for the first time he hopped right in it and started playing. First it was an airplane. He grabbed his toy airplane and flew it around the box. Eventually he did get around to breaking out the crayons but this time he was drawing inside the box instead of on it and that gave me an idea.  I thought I would see what he would do if I started to draw a little scene for him. We made a pond, trees, a sun, some clouds and birds. He colored along for awhile and talked about what we were drawing. Then we busted out his little Frogs and Turtles TOOB and made a frog pond. It was so much fun! This is the first time that Mister C has really been into any kind of small world play like this. I think I had as much fun as he did.

Inspired but our walks at the local park to look for turtles,  I drew a log in the pond and we put the turtles on the log.  We always find them on a log sunning themselves and count them. So, we had turtles sunning themselves in our pond and counted them. He put frogs on lily pads and turtles on rocks. We even put rocks around the pond. It was such a cute little scene.

What kind of fun have you had with a cardboard box lately?

The turtles are from a Safari LTD toob 🙂 You can find them on amazon on the Safari website or sometimes I find them at our local craft stores.
