I recently made Mr . C a small magnet board out of a dollar store cookie sheet and some chalkboard spray paint. I actually did it for this post. Now that we’ve got it, I’ve been trying to come up with some play invitations centered around it. Here is the most popular one to date. I thought I would share it with you because 1). he really liked it and it made him laugh and 2). it’s a great seasonal activity.
I used pumpkin magnets that I found at the dollar store at the end of summer, but you could easily cut pumpkin shapes out of orange foam and add magnet to the back in lieu of having access to those. If memory serves, I believe I’ve recently seen already cut pumpkin foam shapes at Target or Michaels too.
I took googly eyes, and cut various shapes out of black foam to use as features for our pumpkins and stuck magnet to the back. I laid it all out as an invitation to play for him to discover one morning last week.
The Mister got a real kick out of this activity. He would laugh as he would put way too many eyes on any given pumpkin. It was just plain fun! We some good conversation about facial features and he even gave some of his pumpkins cheeks which was something I hadn’t anticipated. There’s some shape learning to be had here with the black foam shapes. For example he would pick a nose and I would ask him what shape it was or I might ask him to find a triangle to use. We learned about big and little too given that I used both large and small sized googly eyes. To work with that I might decorate two pumpkins and ask him which one has the big eyes.
I left these materials out on his little table hear his magnet board for the remainder of the week and he has revisited it from time to time. Only now is it starting to get looked over so it’s time to pack it up and come up with another idea for it. I look forward to finding something else fun I can share with you.
