Here’s a fun activity that never gets old. Cornstarch & water. Have you ever tried it? I don’t actually know what the concoction is officially called, and I have to credit hubby with introducing me to the concept, but whatever it is, it’s pretty cool. ‘A’ never gets tired of playing and experimenting with this one. We made it for the first time when he was about four and at seven he stills asks to make it. In fact, he asked me just the other day, so I thought I would share our activity.
We usually mix it up in a bowl. Sometimes we play with it that way. Other times we’ll pour it onto a cookie sheet or into larger size food storage container (use your imagination). This particular time we played with it straight out of the bowl and ‘A’ had the idea to hide marbles in the mixture to see how hard it would be to find and uncover them. To make the “goo” just mix corn starch and water. You want it to look liquidy but not too runny. It should be difficult to stir if you get it right. Poke it with your finger, it should feel solid and not give. Now…slowly press your finger into it. Your finger should sink like it’s quicksand. If you sink your whole hand into it like ‘A’ did and then try to pull it out real fast you will likely end up picking up the entire bowl. It’s a funny thing…we like funny things :)
It looks super messy and it is fun to get it all over the place. Drops on the table look like spilt milk, but you can actually push them around like they are solid crumbs. It all cleans up fairly easily by just overpowering the mix with more water. It’ll wash right off!
