Have you colored Easter eggs yet? I can’t remember a year I’ve missed. It’s one of my favorite Easter traditions. That said… I can’t believe it took me so long to try dying our Easter eggs with regular old food coloring!

I will never go back to the store bought kits. Our eggs came out fantastic this year. I’m guessing some of you have already been privy to this wonderful information and are saying “Hey Jen…duh..how could you not know to dye Easter eggs with food coloring?” but I just never did!! Somewhere along the way this information bypassed me. My cupboards are stocked with food coloring given all the baking I’ve been doing so this year it only seemed natural to me to think that we could use it to color our eggs. So.. I googled it! Skip to my Lou had a post called “how to dye eggs with food coloring”… PERFECT! She’s also got tutorial in her post of how to blow out your eggs if you want to go that route. I’m more of a boil the eggs kinda gal. So that’s what we did!
Now lets get crackin’…haha..sorry couldn’t resist :)
What you will need:
- Water
- Vinegar
- Food Coloring. I love AmeriColor Gel Paste Food Color, they are all I use.
- Plastic cups, small bowls, or coffee mugs for mixing dye
First, mix 1/2c water with 5 or so squirts of gel food coloring. We used water straight from the tap..not too hot, not too cold. Make sure to dissolve the food coloring completely in the water and then add 1 Tablespoon vinegar and mix again. Viola! You are ready to dip eggs. The color took quickly. I think they got a deeper more vibrant color more quickly than using the tablets. Tip: the longer you leave them soaking, the darker and more vibrant the colors will get.
See…beautiful, beautiful eggs… I can’t stop staring at them!
If you’ve never tried coloring your eggs this way I HIGHLY recommend you do!
