Plain Vanilla Mom

Hitting the Reset Button

in family, parenting on 24/02/16

Life is all about balance right? And every once in a while something can fall out of balance and set an otherwise even keeled Mom into a tailspin. At least that’s what happens around here from time to time. Well it’s vacation week, and for us the thorn in my side has been screen time. We are usually pretty good about it but lately there’s been way more than there should be because with all three boys home, well I’m gonna be honest, I like my morning showers and coffee time as much as the next person so it’s sometimes just easier to go with the flow. But, I was starting to feel REALLY guilty sooo…. today, the one very cold, most rainy day of the whole week I decided to pull the plug on the screens. For the entire day. (Or at least til 4pm when I need to start dinner).

All in all it was a really good day. We played, we baked, we had an ice cream party, the kids turned the jet tub into a “swimming pool” (yup, they really dug out their bathing suits). There was fort building, bowling, bedroom cleaning and even movie making. My eleven year old even worked out what it is to be bored. He did rather well with it too I might add. It was just what we all needed. Like hitting the reset button on our daily routine. They really didn’t even ask all that much when they would be able to watch a show or use their devices.

It’s now 4pm and surprisingly my house is all tidied up and the kids are settling in for a little screen time while I bang out a blog post and work on dinner (which shouldn’t take much work because I managed to get something in the crock pot earlier this morning). So see sometimes all that’s needed is a little “reset” to make us all that much more productive and remind us that we are capable of having a whole lot of fun together. The kicker to getting the house picked up by the way was to tell the kids EVERYTHING we played with had to be put away before we could sit down and plug in. Now, however if I’m being honest I’ve got all three boys clamoring for snacks and dinner while I’m trying to write this and no one can actually sit down long enough to stare at a screen. Murphy’s law.

All is well though. Tomorrow the rain will dry up, we will head out and play and I might even get out of my pjs and hit the grocery store.
