Plain Vanilla Mom

A Big Boy Bed Makeover

in family, home, toddler play on 15/05/14

Why is it every little boy wants a sports room? Well ok, maybe not every little boy, but every little boy in my life at least. My oldest has had a sports themed bedroom since he was three and Mr. C is wasting no time following in his foot steps.

I  really wasn’t planning on moving C into a big boy bed exactly when we did. I knew the time was coming but I was more or less planning on doing it this summer closer to his birthday. You know, re-doing the whole room and making a big event out if it. I pictured having the whole summer to shop and plan. So much for the best laid plans. C was suddenly ready just a couple of weeks ago.

That being said I had to switch my room makeover plans into high gear.  I ‘ve had my eye on this Jr. Varsity Quilted Bedding from Pottery Barn Kids for a while now. Unfortunately there is no Pottery Barn Kids right near us so I settled on looking for alternatives. I was actually able to achieve a similar look for much less even.  (That said I will most likely splurge on this lamp. Luv!) I thought I would share some of my picks with you just in case you happen to have a little sports fanatic in the making as well.

Big Boy Bed Makeover

Plaid Quilt (Target),  Sports Sheet Set (Target),  Rules of the Game Wall Art (Minted.com),  Sports Rug (Overstock),  Baseball Lamp & Shade (Pottery Barn Kids), At the Ballpark  Set of  3 Wall Art Prints (Etsy), Baseball & Football Toss Pillows (Target), Baseball Night Light,  Rugby Stripe Lamp (Target)

His room’s not totally complete yet. Maybe later this summer we’ll have a big reveal.  The wall art isn’t hung and some of his nursery decor (aka: a HUGE tree with monkeys in it) is still up on his walls. I just don’t have the heart to take it down and he really likes the monkeys so I suspect that will stay for awhile. You can actually see a little bit of it in the picture below.

Tip: The bed we used is the top bed to a set of bunk beds we were no longer using. It’s perfect for transitioning a toddler into a big kid bed because it already has the rails. We did the same thing with my oldest when we moved him years ago. It worked like a charm then and so far is turning out to be the same experience for C.

So tell me. When did you move your kids into a big kid bed? Did you go for the whole room makeover thing and make a big deal out of it or was it more spontaneous?

I have to say C is doing pretty well. He’s feeling proud and loving his new bed. We still have his crib in his room as we are trying to get him comfortable slowly. He’s really has mostly been sleeping in his bed since the first night with only a couple of exceptions. He hates change so I’m so afraid when we take the crib out he’ll want it back simply because it belongs in his room. I think that move is on the horizon though. Til then….
