Decorating Minecraft Easter Eggs

in big kids, crafty, Creative Challenge, diy, Easter on 01/04/14

This post is actually part of something new we are taking part in. These Minecraft Easter Eggs were brought about specifically for the Tinkerlab Creative Challenge. First, what is the Tinkerlab Creative Challenge you ask?  Well to quote Tinkerlab it’s a bi-monthly challenge that ” invites children to create, make and invent using a common material as inspiration.  Creative Challenges are designed to encourage children to think independently through self-directed projects that encourage problem solving and creative thinking.” You can read more about these bi-monthly challenges here. Anything that encourages creative thinking, problem solving, independence, I’m all in!

DIY Minecraft Easter Eggs

This months inspirational material was eggs. Any kind of egg you want. We happened to have some really cool realistic looking but fake eggs on hand.  So, I turned them over to my 9 year old, explained what I had signed us up for and asked him to think up something to do with them. I think I’m going to like these challenges. It kind of takes the pressure off me to come up with projects!

Aren’t these eggs the neatest thing? They look so real. I have to get more (found them at Walmart).  There are so many possibilities!

His idea was to decorate them… Minecraft style. Minecraft Easter Eggs if you will. Given his love of all things creeper this was really no surprise. I asked him what he needed. It was fairly simple. A couple different shades of green paint, a paintbrush, and a black sharpie. Fantastic, couldn’t be easier!  I set him up with his materials and let him get creating. First he painted the eggs a couple different shades of green. When they were dry he used the black sharpie to draw on their faces.

That’s it! Easy peasy. But the payoff was huge. Here are the final results. Creeper and Zombie Minecraft Easter Eggs. He was really pleased with the results.  I am too. I’m actually really excited about these.  I think he did a fantastic job! They look great and they are even cuter when set up in little scenes with some of his other Minecraft figures. (although don’t tell him I called them cute because that’s probably the wrong word to use when referring to a zombie).

It’s getting a little harder to find creative things to do with my 9 year old so I’m really exciting about having these Creative Challenges to take part in. I can’t wait to find out what the next one will be!

If your interested. It’s not too late to join in. The Tinkerlab’s Creative Challenge is open until April 30th so come one and create with us! Just click on the image below to find out more, be inspired or add your link to the challenge page.
