Cornstarch and water (aka: Oobleck) is always a popular substance around this house. It’s something that both my two year old and my nine year old can enjoying playing with together. Although I don’t usually have to do much to it to make it entertaining, I thought I would see what would happen if we tried dressing it up a bit for Halloween.
I added some orange food coloring to the water before mixing it in with the cornstarch and then threw in some plastic spiders and “eyeballs” (both from the dollar store). That was all that was needed for some goopy Halloween fun.
Unfortunately adding the food coloring to the water the way I did didn’t really color the oobleck in the way that I was hoping for. So, I gave my oldest the yellow and red food coloring and let him figure it out. The color mixing and trying to tint the oobleck became half the fun!
The tie dye effect they got from mixing the liquid food coloring directly into the oobleck was so cool. Both of them enjoyed stirring it to blend it in. Stirring oobleck takes a lot of work! Eventually they ended up with this…..
More what I had in mind in the first place!
Never made Oobleck? Not to worry. We’ve done it many times and I describe the process further in this post here. It’s super easy and the kids always love it.
