Plain Vanilla Mom

Simple Color Sorting from the Dollar Store

in colors, learning, sensory play, toddler play on 16/05/13

I have to say I am pretty excited about this one. (Not to mention these colorful little fake fruits were fun to photograph).  I just think you can’t beat a two dollar color sorting activity. Which is exactly what I put this together for. I have been patiently waiting for Mr. C to start to show an interest in color sorting, and thanks to a little help from some fun dollar store finds, I think we may be headed in that direction.

When I found these fun fruit shaped ice cubes….

And these boxes, every so conveniently in coordinating colors…. Ok, the yellow/orange was a little kludgy but we made it work. The “yellow” box itself was kind of a orangey-yellow.

The first thing that came to mind was how great they would be for a color sorting activity for Mister C.  So, this week I set them out on a tray for the little guy to see what he would do.  I did one color first to show him what I had in mind and he took it from there. I was surprised but he went with it. Seems like lately, the closer he gets his second birthday, the less likely he is to do anything I suggest…yes… he is that two year old. So I was thrilled when he wanted to play this game! We cheered like crazy every time he filled a cup with the matching color! He thought it was great.

I wasn’t sure how much he would like it or how long it would hold his interest but he played with it for  longer than I thought he would and he’s played with it multiple times this week. I added the scoop after he’d played with it awhile to give things a different element and he loved the added task of scooping and dropping the fruit into the cups.

Eventually these little fruit shaped ice cubed did end up getting hauled around in his farm tractor and used to play basketball but hey….. all in the name of play right? At least it was in context….the tractor was hauling around produce!

And I’m telling you. I’m loving these reusable ice cubes as play material. C likes exploring them too. They are kind of squishy and fun to handle. I’ve been trying to snag them anywhere and everywhere I find them lately. Perhaps you’ll see some more fun posts from us using them! I forsee a counting activity in our future with them.

PS. This post is not sponsored by any dollar store. I just love the place and wanted to share a fun find with you!
