I am big on homemade Mother’s Day gifts. If you were around and following us last year you would have seen THIS POST and THIS POST. (apparently I’m big on Butterfly’s for Mother’s Day too hehe) Anyway, this year is no exception. A few weeks ago I saw THIS POST from We Made That and knew exactly what we were making for Mother’s Day! We didn’t stop with flowers though. I had this butterfly cookie cutter that turned out to be perfect for making decorative plant picks that our Mom’s and Grandmom’s wold love.
It was all very easy and pretty straight forward. We made a basic salt dough (recipe here), cut them out, baked them and then just had fun painting. The sticks are actually wooden kitchen skewers. We just pierced a hole in the dough ornaments (using the skewers) where we wanted them to go before we baked them. Be sure to remove the sticks when baking, and then just hot glue them in after painting. As a last step I did spray a clear coat on to help them hold up a little longer and also perhaps be weather proof enough to use in pots out on the front steps.
I’m thinking these would make really cute teachers gifts too!
Doesn’t that little butterfly look right at home?
Our “olders” had so much fun making these. I can’t wait to do even more projects with salt dough!
