If you’ve been following us you know that we just got done raising and releasing some butterflies. We are fortunate to have a place not too far from us that is (appropriately so) called The Butterfly Place. Seeing as we’ve had butterflies on the brain we thought a trip to The Butterfly Place was in order over the long weekend. The kids had fun. It’s the one place they actually don’t mind practicing their patience just to see if a butterfly will land on them. I like to go and snap a few pictures every now and again.
Those of you on mobile or a slow internet connection are going to hate me. This post is picture heavy. I tried to limit the file size as much as I could. Hope you enjoy! I just couldn’t help myself.
One minor hiccup in the beginning lol…
The painted lady exhibit was especially interesting since we had just raised and released ours. The kids were particularly interested in how their habitat was set up. It was a huge enclosure, not unlike a big glass version of the smaller mesh habitat we had. Here’s how they contained the caterpillars.
I took so many pictures I had a hard time deciding which ones to share with you. This is my attempt at squeezing in as many as I can.
They had a few feathered and finned friends in the atrium too. These little Chinese Quails were so cute. They looked like a cross between a miniature chicken and a bird.
Check out the close up view of this guy…
And here’s an I Spy of butterflies…How many can you find?
I believe these are called Blue Morphos. They are beautiful and when their wings are closed they resemble an owl with their markings. I waited forever in hopes of catching one with it’s wings open and this was the best I could get. I guess they are shy 😉 They were a group favorite though.
Another of our feathered friends. They give the kids a sheet of paper that is actually a scavenger hunt for them when they go into the atrium. I thought it was a great idea! It gets them to really look around. This little guy greeted us as we walked in. He qualified as something with feathers.
This is one of my personal favorites
A close up look at some chrysalides. These were much more interesting than our painted ladies.
I leave you with this beauty…
Sadly no butterflies landed on any of us long enough for me to capture images for you. Maybe next time! One did land on the babycakes’ stroller but I didn’t have time to take a pictures as I was trying to prevent him from grabbing the poor thing! What a treat to get up close and personal to this many beautiful butterflies.
