Plain Vanilla Mom

Summer Reading Book Club for Mom

in mommy time, summer reading on 04/06/12

I have decided to read a book!! Well you say… that’s nice Jen, but hardly newsworthy. Oh but it is! You see I realized as I was walking through Barnes and Noble the other day that I have not read a book start to finish in over a year! [hanging head in shame] When I was working and traveling I had plenty of time to read. What else I was going to do on all those long flights? But since I went on maternity leave and subsequently had the babycakes…well… not so much.  I started a book about a month before C was born but have yet to finish it (he’s 9 months old now). Well that’s about to change. We stress the importance of summer reading around here with the kids and we get involved in a variety of summer reading programs for them. Barnes and Noble,  the local library and most recently we are getting involved with memetales and their Readathon 2012 (more on that later).  But this year the parents are getting on board too! Even Dad is getting involved. In fact, the hubs beat me to the punch. He’s already finished one book in the last week and is onto his second! I need to catch up!

My mission is to get you to join me. Everything is more fun when you have a friend along for the ride right? Will you join me? When was the last time you made enough time for MOM to read a good book? Don’t you just want to? Well lets do it! I’m starting the first annual Plain Vanilla Mom Summer Reading Book Club for Moms! All the reasons we tell our kids to keep reading are the same reasons we should keep reading too. This summer I’m committed to making time to R.E.A.D. Will you read along with me? Here’s how it will work. We’ll have a Book of the Month for June July and August.  To keep ourselves in check I will do a post at the beginning of each month announcing the book and again on the last day of the month for everyone to check in.  Read the selected book during that month and we’ll have a discussion via the comments section of the post on the last day of the month. (we can chat on Facebook too if you like).  I think it will be fun!! So how ’bout it? Are you in?  Please leave a comment in response to this post if you are planning on participating, you know…for moral support.

So here we go…. June’s pick is Maine by J. Courtney Sullivan.
This book caught my eye when browsing the bookstore the other day because (little known fact about me for you here). I grew up in Maine. What a great place to grow up! I thought it looked like a fun summer read.

Now please don’t leave me hanging!! I’m hoping at least a few of you will do this with me.  I will see you back here on June 30th and I look forward to hearing your thoughts on the book!

Thanks for playing reading along 🙂
 – Jen
