Plain Vanilla Mom

An Invitation to Race

in play, toddler play on 16/07/13

Mister C has been really into cars lately. In trying to think up new ways of playing with them and creating new experiences for him, I set up this invitation to race one day while he was napping.  I wasn’t sure if he would bite, but it was the first thing he noticed when he got up!

To Set up Your Track You Will Need:
  • Toys cars. We use THESE
  • Painters tape

That’s it! The setup was simple. All I did was layout a ‘race track’ using painters tape on the floor.  I added a finish line at the end using a skinnier strip cut from the same roll of tape and wrote word FINISH on it with a sharpie. Nothing fancy. I lined up his Little People cars and waited for the race to begin!

When he first spied it, he immediately positioned himself right inside the box. I was surprised that he stayed confined to that space to play with it.  He’s not typically a kid to stay in one spot for very long but he did. He played with those cars, within that race track,  for at least 30 minutes and then revisited it a few more times throughout the day. This activity was definitely a big hit for us.

He spent a lot of time driving his cars along the tape using them more like roads but we also had a number of races….and of course crashes.
